About

Michael D. Henthorn, AIA, LEED AP, founded Henthorn Architecture + Construction, LLC in 2010 to better serve his clients through the benefits of what he believed to be a better, more integrated approach to design and construction.

The architect and builder, who has nearly 30 years of design and construction experience, is a Master Builder of South Carolina, a LEED Accredited Professional, and an Earthcraft House Certified builder. After working at architecture firms in Chicago and Phoenix, he moved to Spartanburg 14 years ago, and is now using his unique combination of skills and knowledge for designing and building homes, renovations, and commercial projects.

More from Henthorn Architecture + Construction’s philosophy about designing in the area:

“Good Design does not take place in a vacuum – it must be site specific. We feel fortunate to build in the Carolina Upstate where hills and valleys give way to beautiful views and trees are plentiful. We feel a home must respect such an environment, and we strive to minimize site disturbance, maximize natural views, and optimize environmental orientation.”

A South Carolina licensed residential contractor since 1999 and a Certified Master Builder of South Carolina since 2007, Mike has built more than one hundred custom homes in the Spartanburg and Greenville areas. In 2007, as one of the first certified EarthCraft House builders in the Upstate, Mike designed and built the first EarthCraft House home certified in Spartanburg County. In August of this year, one of Mike’s homes was certified at the LEED gold level by the United States Green Building Council—the first LEED-H certification in Spartanburg County. Mikes projects have been honored with the prestigious “Pinnacle Award” in 2007, 2008 and 2010. A state level award given by the Home Builders Association of South Carolina, the Pinnacle Award recognizes outstanding accomplishment in design and construction.
